Knock Knock... Who's there?

There are certain times as a mother that your heart just stops. This is one of those times...

Last Thursday, I actually had the novelty of being able to shower without being bothered by my child. Really, its a rare occassion for mothers of young children. Erica was happily seated watching a movie, so I look advantage of the time.

I take my time. Awe, so wonderful.

Right as I'm getting out, I hear the doorbell. Hmm... I think, either: a) my MIL is REALLY early, or b) I took much longer than I expected.

I hurry to the window and look out; no car. I figure I'll just ignore the doorbell; its probably no one I really need to talk to. As I'm about to call downstairs to Erica to come up to me, I see bright light...

SHE HAD OPENED THE DOOR TO THE STRANGER!

I heard the woman say: "Honey, is your mommy here?" So, I took a bit of consilation in the fact that it was a woman. But still. Now, you must understand that I was in condition to come downstairs. I shouted "I can't come down right now," all the while trying to figure out what to do if she nabs my child. She says, "I have a paper, I'll leave it here. Sorry." Then she tells Erica to close the door, and she leaves. I shout down to Erica to close the door too.

Then I call her upstairs. We have a very serious conversation about not opening the door when Mommy isn't there. I'd like to think that she understood me. She did say "I'm sorry," even though I wasn't yelling at her or blaming her. I knew it wasn't really her fault; she didn't know any better. And besides, she probably thought it was her Nan at the door; we were expecting her to come, but not for another hour. That's why the door had been unlocked to begin with.

Well, I learned my lesson: keep the door locked at all times! And I think Erica learned her lesson as well.

Yikes, that's very scary. Thankfully it was okay.

P.S. I don't live in PA, I live in NJ-but very close to Philly. About 30 miles.

That must have been scary. I can remember something similar happening with my brother when he was younger and I freaked out.

I just noticed your previous post so
Happy belated birthday to Erica :)
The pictures are really cute!

I am glad all turned out ok....but isn't it a sad commentary of our society and all that we fear...that we can't even allow our children to open the door for fear of something happening....very very sad...

Happy Birthday to Erica!!

Oh yes, I've always been a stickler about Reagan opening doors. Even doors in the house... because he could let the cat escape OR WORSE! :(

Ha ha, ya, that could've turned out worse. But nothing happened so just be careful from now on!

Yikes - ya that could be a little scary. So much for the perfect shower - it's always something...

I think I would have gone ballistic on my boys if they did that. But now that you wrote this I know I need to have a talk with them tomorrow about it. Thanks for the reminder.
