rant and rave

I'm so excited about my upcoming new template. It may be awhile, since I have NO IDEA what I want to do to this blog. Any suggestions?

To my ranting and raving...

After dinner tonight, I took Erica to Burger King. They're the only place around that has a kids' play area [well, besides the mall, but that was too far, and I'm going there tomorrow with Abby]. I bought an iced coffee just as a valid reason to be there.

Okay, I know that The Simpsons has an almost cult-like following. BUT REALLY- DO WE REALLY NEED TO GIVE OUR CHILDREN SIMPSON TOYS WITH THEIR KIDS' MEALS???

I, personally, think that The Simpsons has gotten very rude and vulgar. Sure, let's teach kids that parents are idiots [and every adult, for that matter]. Let's teach them that its funny-- not harmful-- to make fun of people. Let's make a joke out of violence. And let's introduce all kinds of perverseness to them.

If you are older and watch the show-- thats okay. I'm fine with you. Really, I am.

My problem is with younger children. These kids will get their little toys with their little kids' meals, and wonder "Hmm, I wonder what this guy's all about?" And they'll want to watch it. And they're just TOO young.

I'm livid. Can you tell?

I'm not much of a Simpsons fan and that might be because when I was a kid my parents didn't like me watching it either (for the same reasons you mention), and also because they thought it was junk. I remember all my friends used to love it, but even when I tried watching it, I never enjoyed it... the jokes just didn't sit well with me even though I knew that it's all about sarcasm, parody etc (I've used it successfully as a class assignment in that way but that's with older students). Children are definitely going to wonder what the show is about when they get the free toys. It's sad marketing .. 'get them when they're young' I suppose.

Hi there. I found your blog via a trip to SilverNeurotic.

I just wanted to say that I agree with you whole heartedly about The Simpsons not being appropriate for young children. It does teach some awful ideas of what proper family life should be. However, there is, in my opinion, quite a shortage of appropriate television. Let's take for example America's favorite, Everybody Loves Raymond. Personally, I hate Raymond. The whole show disgusts me. It is so dysfunctional. Of course you just HAVE to hate your mother in law. And your mother and father really should have stayed married for multiple decades so they can verbally abuse each other at every instance.

Sorry, didn't mean to rant, but how difficult would it be to make a TV show that is funny, not racially or religiously directed and NOT a dysfunctional family.

Here endth my rant and intrusion.

Gee, it seems to me I expressed those same sentiments to you when you, your brother and sister and daddy watched the Simpsons when you were kids.

I guess you have to be a mother to realize that it was garbage. And don't forget - garbage in, garbage out.

'liya- When it first came out, we watched it some. I never liked it; found it to be dumb. I don't think it was quite as bad then though... i think its been getting progressively worse

anon- she didnt actually get a toy. I didnt buy her a meal; just an iced coffee for me

cablegirl- I agree with whole heartedly as well.

mom- i never actually liked the show. i watched it often b/c they did, but even then i thought there was a lot of junk in it.
